SUMMARY:Exploring Experimental Cyanotypes
DESCRIPTION:This is an opportunity to play and experiment\, to push cyanoty
pe photograms beyond the traditional\nblue and white. If you enjoy the une
xpected and embrace the uncontrollable this is the workshop for\nyou.\n\nC
yanotype (or sun printing) is an historic photographic process first inven
ted in 1842. We will begin\nwith traditional cyanotypes which create white
silhouettes on a solid blue background. Then we will\nstart adding water\
, exposing the chemicals whilst they are still wet and introducing a few m
ore\nhousehold ingredients changing the end results. Every print is unique
and unrepeatable.\n\nWe will be using water\, white vinegar\, washing up
liquid\, bicarbonate of soda and a few other\ningredients to introduce dif
ferent tones\, textures and colours to botanical cyanotypes. It can get\nm
essy so wear old clothes or bring along an apron.\n\nWe’ll be using cyan
otype chemicals painted onto watercolour paper and a selection of leaves\,
\nflowers and ferns. All materials will be provided but if you have a favo
urite plant\, flower or fern\nfrond bring it along and make your own truly
unique photograms to frame and treasure.\nThis is not a technique for the
perfectionist but the resulting prints are truly original.\n\nEveryone wi
ll leave with at least one print to take home.\n\nAll materials an refresh
ments included. Please take along a packed lunch.\n\n\n\nAbout Jill:\n\nJi
ll Welham is a printmaker and self-taught cyanotype artist\, in 2019 she w
as the overall winner of the International Garden Photographer of the Year
with one of her wet cyanotype prints. Jill works primarily creating both
traditional and wet cyanotype photograms using botanical specimens that sh
e collects from her garden and surrounding countryside. Her images have be
en exhibited internationally and many of her original cyanotype prints are
in private collections around the world.\n\nJill completed a yearlong pro
ject to create a body of work using plants and flowers collected from the
walled garden of Burton Agnes Hall\, a historic country house in East York
shire\, UK. The completed work was exhibited in the Garden Gallery at the
Hall in 2021.\n\nShe now lives and works in Nairn\, in the Scottish Highla
nds and makes her work outside in her garden\, using only the sun to expos
 e the images.\n\n\n
