SUMMARY:Sea & Sky\, Light & Shadow
DESCRIPTION:This mid-winter course provides the opportunity to celebrate an
d get deeply in touch with what is happening in the sky\, at this darkest
time of year\, in the north of Scotland. How does the very low light affec
t how we perceive the landscape and how does it affect the paintings we ma
ke?\nThis weekend course will involve making some quick outdoor studies- c
apturing colour\, light\, tone and form in expressive ways. We’ll spend
some time by the sea observing how light and shadows are moving through th
e landscape. We will then return to the studio to scale up and make larger
paintings.\nThe course will begin at 10:00 in the big MAC studio\, with a
presentation about Georgia’s research as an Arctic landscape painter. T
he presentation will also show a range of paintings by contemporary and hi
storical painters\, who successfully capture the essence of landscape. We
will then gather materials and head out to the beach for a short ‘en pli
en air’ painting session (1-2 hours\, weather dependant). After lunch we
will be based in the studio for the rest of the weekend.\nA wide range of
materials will be provided\, including large sheets of mount board which
will enable you to make big expressive paintings\, with lots of layers. We
will use powdered pigments and glazes to create unique colours and exciti
ng effects. Practical painting demonstrations will help you develop ideas\
, and you will be supported to experiment throughout the course.\nOver the
two-day course\, there will be breaks for coffee\, tea and biscuits. Plea
se bring your own lunch\, or you can walk a short distance to The Pheonix
Café. The studios are warm\, with cosy underfloor heating- always especia
lly lovely in the middle of winter! This course is suitable for all painte
rs- from complete beginners to advanced practitioners.\nThroughout Decembe
r and January Georgia will be exhibiting some of her Arctic paintings in N
ature Turns Exhibition at The Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. You can
