Matt’s body of work focuses on making landscape photographs of places seen ‘in the passing’, or ‘By the Way…’, and which may be on the periphery of attention. Accidental encounters with beauty lie ‘along the way’. Each piece has inevitably been made at the same time as parts of the world have experienced crises and trauma. Matt seeks to reflect on his personal position in the world and his conflict with ‘silence as complicity’, by juxtaposing his landscape prints with panels of text drawing attention to what else was happening in the world, ‘by the way’, when he was photographing.
Each photograph is made using either a large format or medium format film camera, using black and white film, processed and printed by hand at the Inverness Community Darkroom. Prints are made on fibre-based paper and are selenium toned for archive permanence.
Moray Art Centre opening times: Friday – Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
