Stilled Lives, Stirring Colour: Fundamental Painting Skills in Colour

A week for deepening and reinvigorating essential painting skills through transformative still life study.

This week is designed to help students build and develop fundamental, observational drawing and painting skills. Using a range of different studio set ups, the week will focus on developing student’s colour sensibilities through careful observation and experimentation to produce a series of small, timeless and glowing oil paintings.

The first few days will focus on finding, composing, and mapping our compositions, and getting to know our subject matter well. The latter days in the week will focus on developing several small-scale paintings in oil.

ABOUT YOUR TUTOR

Ginny Elston is an Edinburgh based artist and freelance art educator currently undertaking a PhD at Glasgow School of Art, based on the connections between philosophy and painting.

Ginny’s work seeks to make connections with her environment, capturing an authentic experience of it, through reflecting, processing and creating with paint.

‘I work intuitively with colour, shape and light in response to the world around me, partially from observation, and partially from improvisation. I seek out places of stillness as a respite from the busy world, and find solace in drawing and painting from nature. These paintings are often started in situ, and are then worked into back at the studio. They are the results of painterly explorations of the myriad of forms and textures the natural world provides us with.’
