Working from observation with two clothed models, this exciting one-day workshop is an opportunity to explore figurative narrative painting in oils.
Fra Angelico’s “Aunnunciation”, Sickert’s “Ennui”, Matisse’s “La Conversation”, or the psychologically charged “The Cadet and His Sister” by Paula Rego are all, in their own way, “Conversation Pieces” which is a recurring narrative theme depicted in a multitude of diferent ways throughout the ages.
During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to paint their own contemporary “Conversation Piece” from life. Initially, students will make quick studies to investigate different possible compositions of two-person configurations before settling into a large main painting, built up in oils and working on primed panel. Elements of composition, such as line, tone, colour, space, texture, rhythm, shape, movement and form, as well as ways of painting, will all be considered. The workshop will start with slides and a chat on examples of relevant artists’ works as both a guide and inspiration.
Suitable for all levels, there will be clear teaching with demonstrations where necessary. All materials and refreshments provided though please bring your own lunch.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR
Our prize-winning artist, Kenneth, describes himself as a late bloomer. Having first earned himself a degree in engineering (1986), he worked in a variety of different jobs in different countries. He only started painting in earnest in his late 20’s and didn’t go to art school until he turned 30, when he attended the Foundation Course at Leith School of Art (1994). This paved his way to study at Edinburgh College of Art where he received a BA Hons. (1998) and where he won an Andrew Grant Scholarship. He was also awarded an MFA with distinction from New York Academy of Art.
